It is the Mac equivalent of an ISO file that has been in use since Apple transitioned from the IMG format with Mac OS X. That's because DMG is not native on Windows. ![]() To create a bootable USB drive from a DMG file on Windows, you will need to have the right utility. There are three ways you can create a bootable OS X install drive: using a new feature, called createinstallmedia, built into the Mavericks installer itself using Disk Utility or using the third. The OS X 10.9.1 (and presumably newer) installer may use a file named OS X Base System. ![]() Plug in the USB drive and open disk utility. If it has a different name, replace MyVolume in these commands with the name of your volume.
